Trebricha history

The first I saw after having been born was a Collie - and so I was born with love and passion in heart for this wonderful breed which has always been the family dog. During my years of growth our family dog was always a tricolour Collie bitch – from different breeders and lines. No wonder my favourite colour today is a tricolour ! That 3 of our 4 dogs today are sables is only due to the fact that quality comes first. But I still look for that extraordinary tricolour bitch.

My deeper involvement in Collies began  “by accident” 11 years ago when my parents was going to buy two new puppies after the dead of the old one. My mother ( with who I now co-operate) got the advice from the Vet that she would get a better looking Collie if she told the breeder, she wanted to go to shows. Of cause we had to keep this promise to the breeders.  One was successful; She was a sable bitch “Aynsley Bee Queen” who was by Corydon Hot Sun and Freelancer Done Into Danish, and so being a granddaughter of Lynaire All In Black. Despite a bad health which often kept her away from the ring,  she collected a lot of Res. CAC.  She never got puppies because of her health, but in type she was a very elegant Collie with a wonderful deep golden colour (on his older days she went more and more golden – probably being pure-for-sable). We lost her in November 2000, just 3 months after her room-mate. The photo below shows those two wonderful ladies at an earlier age (can’t remember when, but they are probably not more than 5-6 years).

After establishing my own home I looked for a Collie of my own. The time in and outside the show ring had given me an useful knowledge of breeders. Some of the rarest to meet is a brood bitch who can produce plenty of champion quality puppies in each litter, proving a very deep quality laying in the genes. Kennel Sungrace was lucky to have such one; “Danborn I’m Impulsive” who was a daughter of Ch. Angelfield Athens Star and granddaughter of INTCH Angelfields April Affair. Sungrace had used Ch. Bhyllsacre The Saint for her with great success and kept a CAC winning tricolour daughter. She was mated to a new outstanding GB import “Jefsfire Just A Joker” in 1993.  Already before the mating, I ordered a puppy and they were only 3 weeks old when I chose a sable bitch with the help of the breeder and the stud dogs owners. She grew up to be my foundation bitch DKCH KLBCH Sungrace Victorious Vanity; a lady with a great personality and intelligence, very successful at obedience,  at agility (for fun but she loves is), and in her beloved Show Ring.

Always placed as a junior, she was finally shown 11 month old at the Danish Collie Club Championship Show under Jimmie Tait (Aberthorne, GB) and got the CAC, BOB and finally BIS.  5 month after she turned 2 years (the age to become champ), she went champion under Hugh Jones, GB. She was shown rarely after this, but usual very well placed and she got the 4 Club-CACs needed for her Club Champion title in just 5 Collie Club Shows. Her show results are too many to be listed here, but at her two times out in 2000 she went 2nd and  3rd Best Bitch in Breed at All Breed CAC Shows under Allrounders.

When I realised that her quality was so high that I could “allow” myself to breed from her,  I started looking for a stud dog. I knew from the start that I had to use top quality to get top quality.

I studied pedigrees night and day, starting with making my bitch’s pedigree 6 generations back, mainly with the help of the International Collie Handbook which I have, except for 2 editions, back till 1982. This also provided me with a lot of photos of her ancestors in the pedigree – and it gave me a lot of knowledge about lines and breeders. But I also realised that a photo did not tell much about the dogs; I could not see their quality under the coat, faults, temperament or movements. Anyway, looking at all those photos gave me one great advantage which many new breeders miss; I could create my own interpretation of the standard. How should my Collie look ! So I decided to create my own line from the very beginning. To me a Collie is a working dog, and you have to be able to imagine her working in the fields. Movement is the most important quality, but they must also possess a pleasure of working and personality.  A well shaped head  is just as important, as just small faults in head, like a short underjaw, can spoil the overall impression of the dog.

The second thing to realise was that I could not line breed from my bitch. You will very often find that all Collies in a line have the same good points – and the same bad points ! Breeding is a matter of eliminating faults and secure good points. Also, the details I wanted to change in my bitch was so common for her line; a little too deep stop and a little too short head for the perfect match with my “picture” of the perfect Collie.

So I knew that I had to out cross, making what I call “ type breeding”, that is, using a non related stud dog who is not too different in type, but has the quality your bitch lack.

And I saw the benefit in talking to more experienced breeders and ask their opinion and knowledge. It was a dear fellow-breeder to me that opened my eyes for the first stud dog to mate my bitch. He came from a very sound moving line, “Corydon”, being 2 x CAC winner Aynsley Tiger Rag (INTCH Corydon Tiger Topps x INTCH WW89 Corydon Symbol Of Glory). His expression was not the best, but my bitch had it, as well as his dam.  Many years later, in an American article, I actually read an advice to new breeders; “Look at the parents and the grandparents, and you need not look further”, and I agree with this.

My foundation bitch was successful in may ways, but as a brood bitch she was not a big producer. Unlucky I was too that she jumped at least 12-16 months between her seasons.  In the first litter born 21. July 1996 she produced only two puppies, both sable dogs with a wonderful temperament and look, Trebricha Klods-Hans and T. Lille Tuk. To the stud dog owners regret as they had ordered a bitch and could not take a dog. As it is almost impossible to sell a dog as a show-/stud dog in DK, also my puppies were sold to private family and we lost contact.

For the next litter, born 21. July 1997, I used INTCH Shep’s King Of Dreams (INTCH Steadlyn Signature x INTCH Steadlyn Blueberry Dots), and the 3 survivors were two tricolour dogs and a sable bitch. Again it was an out cross – type breeding with focus on movements and the creation of longer lines in head and body.

The bitch Trebricha Frigg was handed over to my parents as I wanted to secure her in the breeding. My boyfriend got her litter brother Trebricha Tor as a pet. He has in body, bone and head what I love and had he been ½ inch taller and able to keep his tail down, he would be a dream in the show ring.

His sister Trebricha Frigg is hard to show in a different way, as she always lacks coat because she gets in heat every 6 month. She has great angulation, also in the front, and the elegant lines I like. She is a impulsive bitch, full of herself, and absolutely bored at shows, but anyway usual placed. She went best junior bitch with Res. CAC under Lynn Westby, GB, at the Danish Collie Club 50 year anniversary show. In all breed shows she has 2 x 4th best bitch in breed under Allrounders and she got her first CAC under specialist Peter Chave, GB, in 2000.

My foundation bitch never got another litter. In July 2000 she was mated to my own import from Brazil, “Lakefield Lissandro Of Liable”, but 5 weeks through pregnancy she got an infection in the uterus which meant the loss of both uterus and puppies – and nearly herself.

In the search for my own stud dog, I studied closely the Int. Collie Handbooks, looking at types, good points and bad points. Each line has something I like and something I don’t like. In the end I decided to buy a dog who had what I believe is the most difficult qualities to find among Collies in Europe; pride, dignity and strength - among others. I found Alex Carvalho’s Lakefield Collies in Brazil, who has a type so very special, and with the  rare qualities which I needed. I wrote to Alex in 1995 ordering a Collie. After many letters and a couple of dogs of interest who turned out not good enough for me according to Alex,  I finally got my Brazilian Lakefield Lissandro Of Liable (Sando) in January 1998, 7 month of age. Except for his litter sister Lione who was send to Switzerland in November 1999, I guess Sando was the first Brazilian Collie in Europe.

My stud dog needed a lot of time to mature why he was placed very different at the shows the first 2 years, but he became better all the time. Being a tall and big-headed Collie with just a little too wide set eyes the chances with English were not the best.  To my great joy he already got his first CAC, CACIB and Best Male/ BOS only 3 years of age under Kari Jarvinen from Finland in June 2000. 3 weeks later he took his second CAC and BOS under Danish Kennel Club Chairman Mr. J. Hindse Madsen. And 4 month later, being completely out of coat, he took Res. CAC and 4.th Open at Collie Club Championship Show under specialist L. Peelen from Holland.  This made him be no 6 in rank “Collie Of The Year” competition, both sexes.  In July 2001 he finally finished his title, after a lot of struggle with an old injury who now made him limp. A lot of visits to a Dogs Masseur, the Vet and a Chiropractor (who knocked his neck and loin bones back in right position), he finally made a show in July without limping. But the visits will continue a little longer, as an old damage takes a lot of time to heal up.

For the next generations to come I will be working the Brazilian Collies into my line in the right proportion. It will take time, but I am sure the result will be outstanding.  My breeding has been very special from the beginning; I still live in a small flat on the 2nd floor with 3 Collies, as a payable house is difficult to find. So everybody think I am a little crazy. But when your entire life is Collie (and you have a helpful and understanding family) everything is possible !

The name “Trebricha” comes from Trea and Chari – my parents two Collies, and Brina my first own Collie. Tre-Bri-Cha – 3 ladies who started our adventure with breeding and showing.

The Inquiries and visits are always welcome. Call me or write.
